Eça de Queiros (1845-1900) studied law in Coimbra, getting a bachelor's degree at 20 years old. arrived at Lisbon in the summer of 1866, continued to write in the newspaper Gazeta de Portugal, a collaboration he started in March that year when he was still a student at Coimbra. In December, he came to Evora to found the newspaper Districto de Evora, as sole editor and political director; he remained in the city until August 1867.
He was responsible for the newspaper until number 58, passing it on to Francisco da Cunha Bravo, on the 1st of August, returning to Lisbon. The District of Evora just went published until September of that year.
The newspaper was created to oppose the government "of the Fusao" (from the Regenerator and Historico parties), sponsored by elements of the Historical Party that do not agreed with some government policies, where the great landowner pontificated and merchant Jose Maria Eugenio de Almeida.
Opposing the government of Joaquim Antonio de Aguiar, Eça criticized the inability to modernize of the State, emigration, justice, education, health, fiscal policy and administrative reform.
